Good for them.

South Dakota was also weirdly close (called with only Shannon County outstanding).  Even considering a bad year for the GOP, considering that Montana banned same-sex marriage with 67% of the vote.  And I don't even think the South Dakota part banned civil unions.

Colorado was a disappointment.

I didn't consider it weird, myself.  As I said in another topic, I have a feeling that the general public is starting to get tired of what is pretty obviously a vote-getting tactic by the Republicans.

Perhaps, but Montana - a politically similar state - passed a ban 2-to-1 while Colorado, a state more moderate than South Dakota in every way as far as I'm concerned, passes it by a notably larger margin.

It is pretty embarrasing that Wisconsin passed the gay marriage ban and the death penalty.

Only for people on the far left. Anyways the death penalty was only an advisory referendum unfortunatly so we don't have it yet. Anyways at least gay marriage passed by a lot, bigger than what I thought would have happened.

I'm far-left, now?

I haven't had much time to look over all results, but I noticed on CNN that the gay marriage ban in Arizona is down with only 49% with 97% counted.

I wouldn't expect Arizona to be the first state to reject such a thing, but great for them if they do!

You really need to look at the measure.

It wouldn't simply have prohibited gay marriage, but civil unions as well.

If it had merely prohibited gay marriage, it would have passed by a massive margin.

That's true, but it's still the first time any such bill has passed, regardless.

Welcome back, by the way.  Smiley

First, thanks.

Second, there is a difference between an initiat6ive that was rejected for over reaching and a bill being passed.

Third, it illustrates the majority view in this country that most people do not want to punish homosexuals but likewise do not want to endorse homosexuality.

In short, civil unions are acceptable to most voters while gay marriage is not!

That is true, but this is the first civil union-banning bill to pass, even.  I believe Ohio's 2004 bill also banned civil unions, and it passed every county but Athens.  I may be wrong, but I am nearly sure that it was.

I think you're right about the majority of people supporting civil unions.  I think more people support civil unions than voted against the issues banning civil unions, out of wanting to ban same-sex marriage specifically, but I think that started to fade this year.  I don't think anyone would have expected to see such a close result for an issue banning same sex marriages and civil unions in a state like South Dakota before this.
