He's an American nationalist.
Fundamentally he views the United States in its current incarnation as weak and being taken advantage of by its neighbors and allies. He seeks to remedy this through a combination of tariffs and diplomatic brinkmanship. Beyond that I doubt he really cares about issues, so reverted to generic conservative positions (or what he perceived as such) to win over Republican primary voters. He seems most uncomfortable going after the gays, so I wouldn't be surprised if he is genuinely sympathetic to their plight.
