There is a kernel of truth in both interpretations, and yet both are awful oversimplifications.  Any multiple choice test for history that goes beyond dates and places is an exceedingly stupid idea.

Actually, if I recall, the AP US history exam doesn't have any questions with specific dates or war battles. The questions are fairly general and focused on historical trends. That said, it's been a few years.
