Why are there still statues of confederate generals in the first place?

plenty of Southern (and some non-Southern) whites hold the CSA era in high regard.  death by invasion leads to a fair bit of romanticizing on the back end, and understandably, it dies hard.

You would think the Confederacy lasted longer than 4 years (with control outside of the Deep South less the 2) the way it is depicted Southern lore.

the feudal Southern power structure endured quite a long time.  say from the 1600s through 1865, and from 1877-1965.  in some places, later.
