I would say Kerry 2004 (though without Hindsight it would be Clinton 2016) because then in 2008 you could have had Republicans such as McCain or Romney lead the party and would have the mandate necessary to make the reforms that would benefit our nation a lot and the party would not move in the direction it has since 2010.
