Jackie Kennedy specifically told Arthur Schlesinger in a series of taped 1964 interviews (just released a few years ago) they had planned to keep Johnson on the 1964 ticket.

That could have changed if some of his financial misdealings had gotten more play in press which very well could have happened if Kennedy was still alive.
