* With hesitation. ** Personal vote.
Updated with details ala Sunrise.
- De Gaulle was good, esp. in foreign affairs and needs no defense. Pompidou was the best candidate to continue that. - Chaban-Delmas had some interesting ideas in handling post May-68 France and is preferable to the social liberal, ultra pro-European Giscard. He was not a bad President but my R2 74/81 votes are more anti-Mitterand than pro-Giscard. - With hindsight, I might go Garaud since Chirac wasn't making it to the 2nd round anyways and no one knew what the EU would evolve into. - Some of the Chirac votes are more about the person than about policy and I would have hesitated in a few elections - 1988/R1 2002. Given Chirac's 1st term was the lesser one, I MIGHT have considered an alternative. - Since the 2007 field was horrible and the French Greens are really stupid, I'd protest with CPNT to troll them and fishing is fun. - Royal is dumb, I hate Sarkozy for a variety of reason (NATO, Middle East affairs, strongman quasi-populism, handling of religious issues, anomosity with Chirac, etc.), and never trusted Hollande to be competent. Villepin would have gotten my vote if he ran but otherwise, France is screwed.
