This just pours salt over the wound, treating the Hispanic community as if they were fools. At the same time, it also plays against his entire nationalist extreme anti-immigrant message that could dissuade Trump supporters who were already feeling less motivated to vote. It also makes him look inconsistent even on the one issue he seemed to be consistent on. So yea, this will backfire spectacularly.
