I will provide detailed instructions with pictures for simple and nutritious recipes that you will also make in your home. Would you be willing to do this?

I'd have to talk about it with the folks, first.

I'll talk to them about it over dinner here in a little bit, but I can say for right now that we do have fresh fruit in the house now - plums, nectorines, and cherries.  I've been pushing for this for about two weeks now based on the recommendation of my dietitian having fresh fruit for lunch.

Inks, I've already said I was stupid for eating that chocolate cake. No need in beating a dead horse, though you like to do that quite often.

EVERYBODY is allowed to enjoy their weekend food times. EVERYBODY

5 meals, means one will be the next week.

So, you wish we would shrivel up and die?

Mom and I have Indian care.

The bed time medicine is my fish oil (cholesterol) and my Tourette's medicine.

Duke, we're still learning, so give us time!

Memphis, we're probably not going to take you up on your offer.  I don't control the stove, that's Mom's territory.  Plus, our taste buds, especially mine and Mom's are quite limited.  Dad likes just about anything, but Mom and I are very picky eaters.  We appreciate the offer, but we don't think it will work out right now.  We'll find diabetic cookbooks and go from there.  Mom has had diabetes for a few years, but hers has been well controlled the entire time.  We mainly worry about her kidneys instead of her diabetes.  She is doing as good as she can taking care of her kidneys.  She will likely end up on dialysis, but she is doing a good job of delaying it as long as possible.

Anyway, dinner is over.  Unless given specific orders to stop by a doctor, we're still going to enjoy our weekends and eat healthy through the week.

I know I need to cut down on the burgers and the pizza, and we will.  We're still going to eat those as a family, but we will cut down on the frequency.  I don't have chocolate cake very often. In fact, that was my first chocolate cake in several months.  I don't eat it very often because of my headaches.  I shouldn't have eaten it this time, either, but I did.  Lesson learned.  Truly.

Plus, as DC and Tmth have attested to, I have lost weight and I continue to lose weight, albeit slowly.  So, I'm headed in the right direction.  My dietitian was pleased with my progress, because I had lost 13 pounds since the last visit according to her scale and am doing a few of the things that she recommended.  I need to do more and I'm trying to do more of what she recommends, which is the purpose of this fruit.  Right after I had the pizza this evening and threw away my plate, I picked up a nectorine.  If I can have fruit after meals instead of fatty, calorie-laden desserts, that will be a start, plus if I have fruit for lunch, I'll be in better shape in getting my fruits and vegetables recommended servings.  Dad may not be able to have the fruit too often if at all, but I certainly can.  I have not been diagnosed with diabetes, so for the time being, I still can have fresh fruit.  On the next Walmart run, I am going to get baby carrots to snack on and take in my lunch to school, as well.  I'm trying what I can think of with the advice that you all have given me over the years and the advice of my dietitian and physician.

I know I need to cut down on the burgers and the pizza, and we will.

You've been saying that for years.  Promise me this: the next time you go to the dietitian, ask him/her, "Is it OK if I eat healthy for 57% of my meals, and for 43% continue my normal diet?"  I'm willing to bet she'll say, "No."

Yeah, I know three days a week is too much to enjoy your meals.  That's why I've already mentioned that generally we just have one big meal and one moderate meal during the entire three day period.  Sunday's are sometimes lumped in with Friday and Saturday, occasionally are lumped in with Monday-Thursday, as well.  Most of the time, Sunday is extremely light because we all go to church twice that day and at different times than each other.  Lunch is really the only time on Sunday we have an organized meal and even that not all the time.  Tomorrow is grilled hamburgers, just because its supposed to be a beautiful day outside plus it is summer time.  We grill every summer just like most Americans do.  Grilled hamburgers aren't bad, either.  Some Sunday's we taper it down to just sandwiches for lunch or sometimes we have a regular meat and vegetables.  We even do have meat and veggies on Friday and Saturday, as well.  No two weeks are exactly the same, for each week has its own challenges and its own schedule.  The weekly breakdown is just a bare bones outline.

ive met plenty of alcoholics who only drink on the weekends!

guess what happens?

weekends start getting longer and longer.

Yeah, I had a family member who was like that.  He's finally doing better with recovery, but guess what... it was when he stopped drinking altogether.

This routine has held for the majority of 25 years.

Again 'enjoy' comes up - as in if its not loaded with meat, fat and carbs you can't enjoy it.

This the f'd mindset you and your family has - how the hell do you expect to make any changes if you regard those changes as punishment? It's childish "noooo I don't want vegetables ..." ... actually that's being unfair, to children, as I think I and a lot of children had a better relationship with food at 4 than you do at 31.

Its not punishment. I never said that.  I just don't think I should totally get rid of hamburgers, pizza, and the like.  I don't think that's what anybody is saying, but I'm just throwing it out there.  Yes, I am a picky eater, but that's not childish.  Many adults are picky eaters.

How soon will bushie have diabetes? 2 years? He already said he was getting close. We know their diets won't change so all this talk of it changing is wasting our time.

I plan to continue to lose weight, and in doing so I hope to prolong it as long as I can.

Are you actually still losing weight, or have you plateaued?

I've slowed down on the weight loss, but I am sitting at 259 which is 16 pounds down from where I was in mid May.  That's down about 2 pounds from early July.

Nobody is saying you should "totally get rid of" them.  You frequently engage in making these false dilemmas and then choose the extreme that you prefer.  There's middle ground, man...

I know that's not what everybody is saying, I even said as much.  I just wanted to eliminate variables.

Yep. The problem is they treat healthy food as a punishment. They don't think it's possible to enjoy a salad or a good piece of fish. Enjoyment can only be found in a McDonald's burger or a pizza. I actually feel worse when I eat those things.

Incorrect.

Is it bad or childish not to like salad?  I have never liked salad with or without dressing.

No one is saying never have a junk food meal. Just don't have it once a week or every day like you do. Try eating salad or something, anything, that's green. Try eating grilled chicken or fish instead. It seems like all your mom knows how to cook is pot roast, enchilada casserole, pizza, burgers, and fish sticks, and that's all you eat when you eat out too.

I eat healthy most of the time, but I still eat pizza sometimes and a burger. Usually once a month. It's about moderation and you haven't shown any ever.

Aside from not liking salad, we have green beans quite often, English peas quite a bit.

A junk meal once a week is absolutely not wrong.  Once a month is not enough.

As far as the pot roast.  It's southern cooking.  It's how we were raised.  We are from the SOUTH.  Nothing wrong with the cuisine of the south.

I will throw in one caveat, though.  Most of my family's food is not fried.

Inks, people like Bushie's family save the rest of us tons of money. They drop dead frequently without taking a penny in Social Security or needing super expensive care for dementia. I guarantee that you will cost the nation far more in upkeep over your lifetime than Bushie will in his.
Bushie, I'm disappointed that at the age of 31, you are not allowed to use the oven and probably don't know how. That's very unfortunate. I'm pleased that you have lost weight and are seeing a dietician. I think she probably meant for you to have fruit with lunch, not as lunch. Fruit, by itself, does not make much of a meal. Try to learn how to make meals for yourself, with or without me. It  may not be pleasant to think about, but Mommy isn't going to be around forever.

I can use the oven, but only to fix things for myself.  As far as the fruit, she agrees with a light breakfast and a light to medium dinner with a fruit for lunch.  I wanted to leave lunch out altogether, but she recommends something healthy, even just a fruit or a vegetable as my lunch.

Lol bro, I live in the south. You live in the midwest. Don't lecture me on what is and is not southern. Tongue

But yes, it's childish not to like salad or anything healthy. I think of little kids when I read your posts about eating, whining about not being able to enjoy their weekend because you can't have pizza every night and burgers for lunch before.

I like healthy items, but I just don't care for salad.  I really don't see the big deal about salad.  Most people like it with dressing, which to me defeats the purpose of the salad.  If I eat a salad, I prefer it dry, and it has to be sans tomato and sans onion.  Carrots, cucumber, celery, lettuce are fine in the salad.  I know there are other foods to enjoy a weekend with, and we do experiment every now and then, but then again Mom and I are picky eaters, which we don't like, but is the way it is.

As far as the region goes.  Oklahoma is in the south, the midwest, and the southwest all at the same time.

What is the purpose of a salad?

And no, Oklahoma is not in the South. And yes, there is something wrong with Southern food, as you can see in this map:

The purpose of a salad, to me, is healthy eating.  Most dressings negate the healthy aspect of the salad its covering.

Oklahoma is in the south, but not exclusively in the south.  It belongs to the Southeast, Southwest, and the Midwest.  Our cuisine is a mixture of Southeast and Southwest styles.  Geographically, we're in all three regions.

No one eats salad without dressing. Olive oil and lemon or vinegar is the way to go. That isn't unhealthy for you at all.

Those are the exceptions.  Most dressings, certainly not all, negate the health benefits of a salad.  Especially the creamy dressings like ranch, thousand island, bleu cheese.

It's more logically part of the South than part of the Midwest, IMHO.

Most of my school books as a kid put us more in the Southwest with Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.  I suppose that's more accurate than either the Southeast or Midwest.

Bushie is far from the first person I've heard give the "Well, I'm from the South" excuse for obesity. I don't really understand what that line of reasoning is getting at. Most people try to spin it as people in the South being the best cooks, which is really silly. Also, I don't think of my cooking as "health food." It's more that it's food. And a lot of what Bushie ingests isn't Tonight, I had a pork chop, couscous, and spinach. It took a total of about 20 minutes to make. And I was all set to take pictures along the way and show Bushie how Sad

I digress on southern cooking being really "healthy" cooking on account of the map.  But, we do have pork chops quite often along with green beans and a baked potato, and maybe some corn.  That's what I mean by southern cooking, but its not particularly unhealthy.

I like how there's a 40% obese OK county across the Red River from an 11% obese TX county.  What cruel fate to be born on the wrong side of the river.

I know, it sucks to be a Texan. Smiley

I will admit that I have a very limited knowledge of salads and salad dressings.  I guess I always associated dressings as neutralizing the salad.  I guess that comes from not really liking salad, and not taking the time to try to like salad.  Same could be said for the rest of my taste buds.  I never, or very rarely, challenge my taste buds.  I always eat the same ole' same ole'.  It does get boring, but for some reason, I'd rather eat the familiar, even though its not real healthy, than to challenge and expand my taste buds and try the wider world of nutritious, yet delicious food.
