Absolutely not.  I'm a Native American and the name does not offend me.  Everybody likes to get butt hurt over something and this is a pointless exercise that serves absolutely no purpose, but to satisfy the taste buds of political correctness activists.

Yes (apparently not normal, but correct anyway)

Actually, Native American leaders have been spearheading this for decades. It has nothing to do with "political correctness activists," if such a thing even exists.

Still, it is a stupid, absolutely pointless exercise no matter who is spearheading.

Didn't say you get free health insurance from your tribe?

Yes I do.  I still don't think the name should be changed.

Lol.

So wait, is that one great great great grandmother?  What year would that have been?

Great, Great, Great Grandfather on my mother's side. I don't know the year, but I'm guessing between 1850 and 1875.  When you think about it, I'm not too many generations removed from full blood Potawatomi Indian.

I'm more Native than you (1/16) and I wouldn't call or consider myself Native by any strecht of mind.

I think the fact that I get and actively use Indian health care and am invited to many of their celebrations (even though I don't attend) than I am kind of tied to the Indians.  If I didn't use Indian health care, I would probably consider myself a plain old Caucasian American.

Now, to affirm what you said, whenever I answer questions about my ethnicity, I always answer Caucasian not Native American unless it is a Native American-focused questionnaire.  The reason for that, is that, yeah, I look like a plain jane, white American.  I make verbal mention of my heritage if asked, but I very rarely give written mention.

So is this all tribes or just yours? What if you're only 1/64 Native American?

As far as I know, my niece who is 1/64 would be eligible for tribal health care, as would her children who would then be 1/128.  The only problem is she lives too far away.  I live almost too far away, but 90 miles is better than 2,000 miles.  I don't think the amount of Indian matters so much if you have a traceable ancestor.  I think it's any tribe, too, not just the Potawatomi's.  I could be wrong on that, though.

Huh, Maybe Im misinformed, I'd think a male line would be rare.   Was this in what is now Oklahoma?

Sorry to derail the Redskins thread...

Yes, this was all in Indian Territory (Oklahoma).  The only female involved in my direct line is my mother who is 1/16, but there is a male at her level, her brother, my uncle.  I think my tribe, anyway, is a patriarchal tribe instead of a matriarchal tribe.
