the republican party has basically ceased to exist in massachusetts.

We're trying to do the same thing here in New Hampshire.

Well, they've still got Sununu and Gregg in the Senate seats, so you guys need to work on them first.

Yeah, we need to get to work on Sununu.

I think there's a decent chance that Gregg will retire in 2010 if Republicans are in the minority.

Just hope the state economy doesn't go south or anything like that and you end up having to defend the Democrats over that.

The economy is, for the most part, a federal issue.

Maybe if we had huge taxes or something, but NH Democrats are libertarian-leaning.

Yes, it helps offset the lack of a sales or income tax. It's regressive, but people seem to prefer this system.

Overall, we have either the lowest or second lowest tax burden in the country of any state.

And if you think that the voters won't be more than happy to blame the state legislature and the Governor for a bad economy, you are kidding yourself.

No one has ever blamed the state government for the economy here.  Trust me, not gonna happen.

NH Republicans have controlled the state for much of the last century. I didnt' hear you guys whining about it then.

I am looking forward to the Democrats controlling everything here in NH, because I know they will do lots of good.

Corruption and pork have never been a problem here. We're a small state and we keep it simple.

Good lord, I have never accused NH Republicans of being corrupt in anyway. I just disagree with them. NH is a state where ethics and corruption have never been issues.

I trust both parties to keep it clean, I am just excited that Democrats finally have complete governing power in this state for the first time in 100+ years.

However, aren't you concerned about the impending lack of checks and balances in any way at all?

Not really, not in this state.  We don't really get dirty politicians in this state. I trust all the state Dems very much.

I'm just happy that we'll finally see a minimum wage increase.

Lynch got elected with nearly 65% of the vote. Isn't that enough to break the Republican governing power?

Lynch actually got 74% of the vote.

And the Republicans in the legislature blocked much of his agenda the last two years, so of course I'm happy that the Democrats won the legislature.

scoonie is a former massachusetts resident.

Yeah, for 10 short months. I've lived in NH pretty much my whole life.

And I actually don't agree all that much with Massachusetts Democrats. I'm much more of a libertarian-leaning Democrat (like NH Democrats). But these are two different states with vastly different populations, demographics and economies, so it's hard to compare the two.

and if democrats are the party of the working people, how come no one can afford to live in massachusetts?

Massachusetts is a small, overpopulated state filled with extremely eduated people who make good salaries. The whole eastern half of the state is basically a big Boston suburb. Any metro area with a strong economy is going to be expensive to live in (see New York/New Jersey, DC Metro area, etc.)  Doesn't have anythign to do with the state government, it's the nature of the Boston metro area. Western Massachusetts is quite affordable.

And for the record, I hated living in Massachusetts (overcrowded, way too much traffic) and will never live there again.

Don't be so hard on Massachusetts, guys. It's a northeastern state in a time where a lot of the economic growth is happening in other places.

The reason why Massachusetts is so expensive to live is because the economy is so good. A lot of people who work in Boston make a lot of money.
