That's what Prescott Bush was for on the former, and as for The Plains, he [LBJ] could market himself as a Westerner rather than a Southerner.

Bush would of made it closer yes but wasn't Connecticut a swing state in that time. I wouldn't think just a simple VP pick could save Nixon in any swing states (including Connecticut) given the landslide that map shows and I doubt it would go Republican before states like the Dakotas or Kansas. He could do that yes but you have to remember those states (minus Oklahoma) have historically and are still very republican states and would vote red in a landslide. I don't think they would ditch this trend especially considering the republicans are lead by a moderate westerners. Only Goldwater could of lost these states which he did in 1964 because he was a horrible candidate.
