But the most interesting part is the period called by historians as
"the era of the disputed lands", former states disputed between:
- Hopeland and Utopia:
the Plains (Dakotas and Nebraska). After undecisive referendums (not enough turnout, not qualified majorities,...), finally, a joint condominium is established, which lets Hopeland in charge of foreign affairs, defence, police, justice and law-making, but which grants economic advantages to Utopia and a veto on social, environment, farming, economic matters.
Hopeland first crushed quickly various rebellions in Wyoming and Utah, but was forced to let a Mormon governorship gain a large autonomy.
- Utopia and Dixieland:
Missouri. After a short and little war, Utopia let Dixieland take control of Missouri, with the only condition that people who disagree can leave freely and establish themselves in Utopia.
- Dixieland and Old America:
Virginia. A fierce war is won by Old America, supported by a larger part than expected of the Virginians who turn against the Dixie troops. The new border remains disputed.
Dixieland was also forced to withdraw some troops to tighten the control of the Spanish-speaking areas in Texas, which want to join Hopeland.
- Rustland and Old America:
Pennsylvania. After plans to dismember PA, Rustland agrees to let Pennsylvania join the Old Amercia, provided Old America send troops to defend Western Michigan against Utopia's secret attempts to grasp this territory and to police the southern and mountainous Kentucky against some irredentist "Rebs".
