Years ago, one of my coworkers was a crusty old ex-Marine. He had a particular distaste for his daughter's boyfriend. He was telling me how the Marines taught him that it's not enough to kill your enemy. You have to kill the enemy's entire family in order to neutralize the threat altogether. I'm not sure that that's official Marine policy, but that's what he said. It made an impression on me.
