POD:Instead of waiting John Hinckley who had been waiting till spring to gun down Carter stalks the President during in relection campaign in Tennessee)

October 9th 1980:Whille speaking in the Opryland Hotel hotel Jimmy Carter is shot two times one in the arm and fatally in the chest by a man obsessed with the actresses Jodie Foster.   

Afterwards Walter Mondale is sworn in as the 40th President of the United States in his hotel room.

October 9Th 1980:President Mondale address the nation in sorrow saying
"We lost a good man and a activist for peace for a heartless assassin looking for attention.

October 8Th 1980:John Hinckley  Jr is tackled outside his home and taken to police after a 12 min standoff which kills 1 officer

October 15Th 1980:President Mondale says Florida Governor Rebuin Askew of Florida to be his running mate

October 13Th 1980:The funeral for President Carter is held outside the Capital building

November 4Th 1980:After a close race in Missouri which Mondale barely wins Mondale is reelected as president.

November 5, 1980: Following his victory, Mondale announces that Vice President-elect Askew will be nominated to take his office early, by being confirmed by the Senate.

November 5th 1980:Ronald Reagan concedes the election by saying
"Well America has decided and while I disagree with it I for sure accept it and I say you shall too."

December 9th 1980:President Mondale nominates Ted Kennedy for Secretary of State.

January 20th, 1981: Mondale inaugurated in emotional address widely praised around the nation, promises unity.

January 22nd, 1981: Operation Eagle Rescue succeeds, Iranian hostages freed by helicopter and sniper fire. 2 U.S troops and 2 hostages are wounded, 14 Iranians are killed.

January 27th, 1981: Mondale speaks with the Soviet PM over the phone to discuss a nuclear arms treaty.

January 28th 1981:The 1981 state of the union is held.

President Mondale gives his ideas on grouping after President Carter's death the future of the Cold War and what's going on in Iran.
