I don't think he does to be honest: the GOP was smart to choose McCain, the democratic nomination fight was unnecessarily drawn out and bitter, and he faces a high level of scrutiny because of his blackness, youth, and short time in high political office.

The Republican brand however, is in terrible shape: if McCain wins in the fall, it will be in spite of his party affiliation, not because of it.
