The Republicans in this thread are real classy.

Almost as classy as this "new type of politics" you guys love to preach about!

Phil, I know you're feeling a little giddy right now over this woman's attack and how it could benefit McCain, but do you want to step back and explain what, exactly, this attack has to do with a "new type of politics"?

easy. Obama is black. The guy who committed this horrible act was black. Therefore all black people are violent criminals. It's an easy leap to make really.

From what I've been able to gather, this event took place in Pittsburgh, not Philadelphia, and was an ATM robbery with some psychotic violence thrown in, not so much a politically motivated attack.

Alleged link to photo (note - right-wing blog alert):

I expect some interesting comments.

As the comments note:  The B is upside down.  Maybe she did it to herself in a mirror.  Or maybe the thug was standing on top of her.

my mental image was a lot worse than what's shown in that picture

as things stand now, I'm far from convinced that this woman's account is entirely truthful (believe me : a carving by a mugger would be MUCH uglier) and nobody seems to have picked up on the story except for conservative blogs.

Yeah, I'm surprised Barack doesn't have this on his website with some fancy graphics.

CNN politics and crime pages? Nothing

msnbc.com front page? Nothing

Fox News? Nothing

If accurate, this is despicable and hopefully we will find the criminal and lock him up for a long, long time. Scum like this belongs in hell.

If this is a staged event, a crime never really happened, anybody involved with knowingly spreading this is going straight to hell when they die.

Personally, I find the story suspect. For one, who the heck is capable of carving a "B" with an assault knife on somebody's cheek? Secondly, why would a petty street criminal care about presidential politics when most of the time they only care about their next hit of whatever drug they're hooked on at the moment? Finally, why would he look at a car's bumper when his primary objective is to commit the robbery and get away with it? I would imagine a criminal would be far more likely to be looking around for witnesses/cops, a clean getaway, than keeping an eye on his victim's car bumper...

I don't want to believe that this woman is making up the story, but it just seems a little too perfect for the McCain campaign, especially since the McCain campaign just announced that they were going all into Pennsylvania, and nothing would terrify older whites more than this. And as you noted, some other things about the just story seem odd.
