Trump, in many ways, was the inevitable outcome of a Republican Party that over the past couple of decades has become increasingly radicalized by the right-wing media machine and fears of a more racially/religiously diverse America. If Trump didn't run in 2016, I assume someone different would've filled his role and rode a radical right-wing populist message to victory, in both the primaries and general election. I can't see Clinton winning in 2016, as she was quite unpopular and a Clinton victory would've contradicted the 2-term rule that has restrained partisan control of the white house for most of recent history.
