Let Kristallnacht be a reminder of the threat of racism and fascism

On 9-10 November 1938, Nazi stormtroopers led a wave of violent attacks on Jewish people and property throughout Germany and Austria, which the Nazis had annexed. During these pogroms, 91 Jews were killed, thousands were taken from their homes and incarcerated in concentration camps, 267 synagogues were destroyed, and some 7,500 Jewish-owned shops were smashed and looted. The Kristallnacht pogroms presaged attempts to remove Jews from German life completely.

This was today, 75 years ago.

Because of this, there was a memorial service today at the Stadttempel in Vienna, which is the biggest synagogue in Austria.

President Fischer was there and held a speech and also the Austrian Supreme Rabbi Chaim Eisenberg and the IKG-leader Oskar Deutsch (leader of the Jewish Community in Austria).

The Stadttempel synagogue was the only one of over 100 synagogues in Vienna that was NOT burned to the ground 75 years ago, even though the interior was destroyed.

The reason why it was not burned down by the Nazis:
