I've kept two turtles and one snake. The turtles were okay, assuming you select the appropriate habitat for the species you choose. Most will not be happy with a small dish and a plastic palm tree. Take some time to figure out how to make your turtle happy. Also, if you get a big turtle it can make huge turds, so be ready for some cleaning. Filtration of the water helps, but is not absolutely necessary. Wash your hands often, because they can be infected with the nasties. The North Museum on the corner of President Avenue and College Street employs a few turtle geeks who can answer just about any question you have, if you're in Lancaster. If you're in Phila, I'm sure you can find folks there who are just as geeky. Mostly, just be sure not to ignore its basic needs. Food, drink, shelter, and a good host to clean its shit are very important to all animals, including turtles.
