A few times.
My most successful alcohol-related endeavor in New Hampshire was at a Gordon research conference in New London, NH, about 20 years ago. The conference leader managed to get some funding to sponsor a contest in which all the post-docs and grad students participated. The third-place winner would receive $200, the second-place, $300, and the top prize was $500. I was keen on getting one of those prizes. I knew I had lots of reproducible data and a good story to tell. The trick was getting all these old guys to come over and hear my spiel. My advisor suggested the idea of getting a nice bottle of single-malt scotch and some little souffle cups and putting them out near me at the poster session. I followed that advice and it worked like a charm! Fore the entire session I was surrounded by some of the biggest names in the field of atomic and molecular inelastic scattering dynamics, all asking me questions and at least feigning interest in my work. The next evening when the first-place winner's name was called, I gladly received my check. A fifty-dollar investment netted a five hundred-dollar prize.
