It's partly their fault for hiring someone in 90 mins. Maybe if they'd been more thorough, they'd have known.

Guys, again, I have no reason to give up on myself or think of myself as less than normal society.  You guys think that, but I don't.

You need a job you can be good at, that doesn't require spoon-feeding and baby-sitting.

There's nothing abnormal about doing a job like that, millions do. You're constantly wandering off wild goose chases in search of that thing you're good at, call-centres (NO) and you might need to accept that you need more time on CADD in your own time before going down that path again. Yes, again, that means giving up your free-time. In the meantime surely any job is better than draining more from your parents.

Use the discussion on Tuesday as a positive thing. He has been infinitely patient with you, so don't try that. Ask him seriously, what does he see as your biggest issue. ACTUALLY LISTEN. Accept that you're not ready for full-time CADD work yet. Because it's obvious that you're not, there's a difference between being negative and assessing the situation. No boss, would have the time to deal with you while you're at this level.

I don't see the radio thing as weird. If I'm knuckling down to something, I shut my office door and put on a podcast or something on YouTube - always helps me. There is something about the American workplace that just seems awful.

On topic ... Let's make these points clear

a) if you were as good a drafter as you believed - you would not be getting fired
b) you're an awful judge of your own abilities
c) just because you want a career in something, doesn't meant you're either going to have one, or have one on your timetable
d) it's clear your CADD skill-set isn't READY yet - stop, get a low-demand job - practice CADD every night (yes, EVERY NIGHT) then in 3-6 months time. Start looking again.

You're never going to have a career if you keep jumping from CADD job to job without building your skill set to a workable level. The other issue, considering your inability to judge your own abilities, did you over-sell yourself in the interview.

It could be that the negative perf review was because you weren't doing things he's assumed you should be able to, even with basic CADD training.

That's the thing about a career vs a job - one is different from the other, not because you decide it is, but because of the effort you put behind it. That includes, occasionally doing work outside of standard hours, in my case to read up on a topic I have to write on or attend meetings and need to understand it.

I'm still going to follow through with my current plan of applying for CAD jobs.  My career is not over, nor is it on hold.  My career is in the here and now, front and center.  I do not doubt my abilities at all and my confidence is not shaken.

I hate to be cruel, but frankly, it should.

You seem utterly intent on not taking this on as a lesson. That somehow this is the Boss' fault for not having patience with you.

Good advice for workers:  be first to work, last to leave, no music, head down, don't watch clock, show up every day, don't suck.

You catch on fast, newbie.  The Update is an excellent ongoing education on How To Not Live Your Life.

Yeah, the American workplace is terrible.

How are things for workers Down Under?

Not that bad... I mean, the idea that you can't get sick or need to be away from the office for the first six-weeks without being fired?

I mean, there are certainly more restrictive and controlled workplaces.

Bushie, serious question

Have you considered seeing a psychiatrist?

I repeat my question.

I believe he answered that question some time ago... he won't do it because of how it would look. He'd be even more damaged goods in the marriage market.

Constructive Idea #48482984:

CarMax has dealerships in both Tulsa and OKC. From my understanding, their sales associates are paid hourly rather than by commission, and since the cars have fixed non-negotiable prices, that takes a considerable amount of pressure off the salesman. At their Houston stores, they even have little golf carts to drive you to the car you want to look at, so there's not even any walking involved.

Can Jeff handle this?

Sales = commissions = stress... and Jeff is unable to cope with ... anything.

Who is more thickheaded: Bushie, or the people that have written literally hundreds of posts (some of which are very verbose) giving him advice they already know he'll never take?

You know what?

You're right.

Very happy to not have any holidays until Christmas... which I've planned to maximise time at home and minimise time with family.

I'm going to try to steer this thread back to the crisis at hand.

Jeff, why don't you consider finding a relatively non-demanding non-CADD job (yes, it will probably be hourly and minimum wage or close to it) and doing that for a few months while you work on improving your CADD skills? You're obviously not at a place right now where you can perform at a professional level. If you were, you wouldn't have been fired today.

A different job at a larger firm isn't going to address the root problem. Companies don't want to have to train you on-the-job. That's supposed to be what you went to school for. They can easily hire someone else who got better grades than you did and hasn't been fired from any drafting positions. If you're not ready to hit the ground running from day one, you have no business walking in the door. Take a few months to get yourself more up to speed.

In some ways... the two are connected.

If you believe that the Earth is about to end and you're going to be among the chosen ... why bother?

I suspect that the Update crew may be able to clue you in to why you have so much trouble keeping a job if you are willing to listen.

I don't listen to personal attacks and insults.

Your mistake is to confuse tough advice for attacks and insults.

It's more than the mail.  I've got to get some more medicine and get my bills so I can pay this week.  Plus, I am getting cabin fever, I need to get out of the house.

1. There are pharmacies and drugstores in OKC.

2. Do you seriously pay your bills by regular mail? For God's sake, Jeff. Pay them online and save your poor father the gas money and the stamps to mail the checks.

Again, do not question me because my plans may be different than what you would do.  Just because mine are different, doesn't mean mine are wrong, so be quiet.

Except respectfully, they frequently have been wrong.

But the trip is his father's call.

It doesn't seem like Bushie's Bible study is teaching him very theologically sophisticated interpretations.

"Interpretations"? You have read what this literalist church is like?

What a horrific interpretation of Mark 14. The story was about how the perfume had no intrinsic value and how material life is fleeting not "God rewards those who submit to him the most."

I'm guessing all of your Bible Studies end with the story of the day being interpreted as "submit to him more and he will reward you."

That actually is quite frightening.

Has no one been listening to what Bushie has said about his church... they're actual literalists. There's no space for interpretation, no space let alone toleration for freedom of thought.

Even literally, I don't see how you get that out of Mark 14. It's really kind of strange. "Submit more to God and God will take care of you" is usually what Bushie says, but that's coincidentally the lesson today? From Mark 14?

Bushie what did you learn in your previous Bible Study before this? Do you remember?

This is what they believe already... so they're scrambling to justify their views.

Indeed - we've already seen the consequences of what happens when people are to resign responsibility for their lives and get told "don't worry, God will provide... and don't ask questions!!!"

That's the nice thing about pizza delivery. You sit in your car and drive all day. I don't know why you won't consider it. The pay is comparable to all these pipedream CAD jobs that you'll never hold anyway.

He doesn't really seem to like driving though (especially if it's raining or whatever).

Yeah - if he can't drive when it's raining, or risk of storm... or even... SNOW! he can't do the job.

Long story short - aim for the lower guaranteed hourly rate. The higher rate is an incentive-based and you just don't have the diet required for that.

I say this as someone who would NEVER take on a commission/incentive role, because I know I don't have the belly for it.

I'm tempted to vote for all Democrats except for James Lankford and that's only because of a personal relationship with Mr. Lankford.

Is the extent of the personal relationship that you met him once and he seemed like a nice guy?

Surely that's enough... a politician would never be nice to a constituent and not mean it!
