He may be right, but I'm not too worried about that at the moment.

Actually, the Asian crisis of 1997 had a huge negative impact on the US. That is precisely when those countries started keeping very low currencies and a "savings glut", exporting all of their debt here, where we stupidly took it.* That is part of why we are in the shape we are in today.

* If you look at the numbers, both the dot-com and housing bubbles started in 1998.
