No, South Africa never had direct presidential elections and the President has only been the real baas since 1983.

Anyhow, the pre-94 stuff (if you're white) depends a lot if you're doing it with hindsight or not, because nobody these days except a few racist buffoons will admit to liking apartheid but in a white South African context in 1948 and on, a lot would probably approve of it.
