It's outrageous to think that the Civil Rights movement was about "ending racism", it was about dismantling structural barriers that created a racial caste system. Only a fool would think that racism can be ended or eradicated, especially when we have a incarceration system that systematically imprisons African-American men and a state of political discourse that allows racial caricatures to be deployed whenever necessary.

It would actually be even more infuriating. Hypocritical white assholes who get on their soapbox to lecture people who have more important things to be thinking about as to how they should be sorry for their 'privilege', when of course the very same people will most likely have lived the same privileged existence. Take some advice, if people from minorities find this sort of thing 'tin-eared' and hurtful, they should grow a thicker skin and stop whining. It is perfectly acceptable in our society to insult a ginger person for 'having no soul', or to insinuate that every Roman Catholic is a paedophile who lurks in a confessional box waiting to molest choir boys. Blacks, homosexuals and other 'oppressed' minorities need to grow up and realise that, yes, people can be insensitive, or deliberately hurtful, but that in the end that is not and should not be a crime. Threatening someone is, blackmailing them is, but not making an insensitive joke or a slip of the tongue. Do you really think racism (and sexism and all the other 'isms' and phobias) will be reduced by having a hissy fit every time someone makes a comment like this, a clue: no. It will be reduced by not forcing people to constantly be on edge, fearing that they will lose their career and prospects and then held up to media ridicule if they make an insensitive or hurtful remark.

Now, I'm a very privileged person, at least by global standards. But I'm not shutting up because of this.

Venezuela has clearly been a democracy for the past 15 years except for a couple days of fascist dictatorship in 2002. Chavez's attempts to amend the constitution to extend his own power were rejected and he fully accepted the results.

Venezuela does still retain certain democratic institutions - despite the severe damage done to them by the fascist regime over the last 15 years. But I do not think this is going to stay there for long. Chavez, it should be granted to him, was charismatic and loved winning in an actually contested race. True, he stacked the system heavily in his favor - but let the (heavily disadvantaged) opposition compete (within limits): he thought it was fun. Maduro will not be winning elections in the future, and he knows it. So, frankly, I do not think we will have many more elections in Venezuela under this regime.

In any case, ideologically they are run-of-the-mill fascists, Mussolini copycats. Which, of course, makes them the darlings of the ultra-right-wingers, like you.
