I wonder why Cleaveland was changed to Cleveland.
Because it was the frontier, two hundred years ago, and many people were illiterate and didn't care so much about how exactly Moses Cleaveland spelled his name, I'd reckon. Cleveland is the more common spelling for the surname, after all.
