The anybody-but-Pennachio forces in the NJ GOP hit gold this weekend.

He made his announcement from a ski resort in Colorado...

Take off points for that if you will, but considering that Sen. Lautenberg has been living in New York City for years now...

This guy is clearly a dud. Whatever Lautenberg's doing, he's been a senator forever and represents the state well so he can get away with it.

I don't know if he's a dud, because...well, no one knows anything about him yet, save that he probably hasn't published any manifestos or mounted a Libertarian campaign for Governor.  (Which is a good start.)

Republicans like him because he can self-finance, because he's young, and because he's hispanic.  I'm very interested to see where he stands on the issues, and whether or not he's actually ready for prime time.

I've never been very secretive of the fact that I just plain don't like Frank Lautenberg—he has little to offer the state these days but cranky partisanship.  Never mind the fact that he'll be pushing into his 90s in the Senate if NJ re-elects him.

Have some dignity, man. Senator Lautenberg is going to be reelected by probably the widest margin he's had ever.

So, in other words, he might win by 10 points for the first time ever.

Meanwhile, former Democratic State Chairman Tom Byrne is polling the state about a possible primary challenge to Frankie.

Tom Byrne is irrelevant and any former political reporter would know he'd have no chance.

I don't recall saying anything about him having a chance, do you?

Yes! Against a gold-star challenger like Andy Unanue, he should win by 15 points or more. Pretty amazing.

Quite unlikely.  It's hard to envision Unanue doing significantly worse than Doug Forrester.  Or (ugh) Pete Dawkins.

For what reason would you mention him, because he is so irrelevant, than to make a suggestion that he'd matter in anyway?

Sorry, I'll refrain from talking about politics from now on.

The Lautenberg people really push the Unanue-doesn't-live-in-Jersey line with a straight face?  Really?

Frank sorta owns a restaurant/bar in Bergen County.  That sorta kinda counts, doesn't it?  Sad
