So would the referendum actually be on whether or not to legalize gay marriage, in contrast to the other states where the referendum was about whether or not to put anti-gay discrimination into the constitution?

This is good news. Does anyone have a map or list of which areas of Maryland had Senators supporting gay marriage and not?

Polling has shown a close race. I think Maryland may be different then California for a few reasons.

1. It will be 4 years later and support for gay marriage increases every year.
2. Maryland has a higher percentage of highly educated citizens.
3. This is not a ruling from a court. So no cry's of Judicial Activism.
4. Maryland is more liberal then California.

I've lived here my whole life. I believe if this goes to the voters in 2012 the forces of marriage equality will win. 52-48.

Hopefully. The other difference between Maryland and California is that Maryland has a much higher black population. Blacks aren't as anti-gay marriage as said to be, but still considerably moreso than white Democrats.

1. Legislators expect this to go to a referendum in 2012 and get repealed, which is why some probably saw no point in going through with it.

So there won't be a referendum because the vote failed?
