I have no fuggin idea. Perhaps if everyone started thinking about life the same way thought about it before the civil rights era....Then again, the South has a vibrant semi-professional and professional class that has been kept conservative, and not cosmopolitan by adapting to the reactionary agrian southern culture. (there was some HIGH industrial projects in the South in its time, but it just appears that it went straight from an agricultural to a service-based economy with not much of its own original industrial adolescence.
