So what exactly did the fixed election dates law do?

All but one Liberal leader has become PM at some point. Just sayin'.

I actually like Dion. Apparently it's just me and Kyoto though.

They should team up with ARG and Zogby for Zogby-ARG-EKOS super-polls!

That'd be great. Smiley

Clearly, the Liberals need a Trudeau.

Isn't Justin running?

Wasn't there some talk a few years ago of the Bloc running candidates in some of the Francophone ridings in the Maritimes and Saskatchewan? I seem to recall reading it somewhere.

I hope we see the return of high-quality advertising such as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMsqEph7a8I&feature=related

I still can't get through it without laughing

Don't the Greens always do worse than they poll?

Does anyone know of a good non-partisan blog that follows the Canadian election? I'm dying to get more detailed coverage than the CBC and CTV

I read this article today that discussed the possibility of a Liberal-NDP coalition to stop Harper from forming government again. Is such an absurd scenario even vaguely plausible?

Is it possible for the Liberals to lose the popular vote yet win more ridings?

Americans may have difficulty getting results. Canadian law expressly forbids transmitting results to regions of the country in which voting is still open. IIRC from 2006 this means no online feeds or online results in general.

In 2006 C-SPAN simulcast CBC coverage. I pray they do it again because otherwise I don't know of any way to get results.

It's certainly a very stupid law, but I think just to be safe it's worth not mentioning anything on here before the times MaxQue mentioned.

I, and any American with cable, should be able to get results from the CBC as soon as polls close in Newfoundland. I can obviously post them without fear of prosecution, but can those in Canada read them without violating the law?

In 2006 they broadcast the entirety of the CBC coverage, so I assume they will again this year.

C-SPAN seems to be delaying their broadcast until 9 PM EST. Drat.

It's actually kind of nice now that I think about it. Only the Atlantic Provinces will have closed at that point, and we'll be getting instant results from them rather than waiting around for an hour while they count.

Polls have closed in Newfoundland and Labrador. Is the ABC movement a success? Elections Canada won't let us know.

OK, sorry, I'm thoroughly confused by the discussion of when results will be released.  It sounds like people are saying that results will released in local media (such as local TV stations) as soon as the polls close in a given province, but that it's illegal to transmit those results to other provinces as long as voting is still going on?  How the heck is that practical?  Surely with internet, telephones, etc., if the results are being broadcast in one media market, they'll leak out to the rest of the world??  Can someone explain this?

Your understanding is correct. They can't monitor everything perfectly, but they do prosecute anyone who they catch spreading results into provinces where voting is still open.
