European election poll for Germany (Emnid, 01/26)

CDU/CSU 42%
SPD 26%
Greens 10%
Left 8%
AfD 7%
FDP 3%

I suppose the only purpose of the poll is to push the AfD, since this poll was commissioned by BILD.

And it seems the FDP is struggling to re-enter the European Parliament even with the lowered threshold in effect. They should pray that the Consitutional Court strikes the 3% clause down as well in the coming weeks.

That AfD number does look realistic, though...

Out of interest, which countries do not have automatic "registration"?

In the EU ?

All I guess, but I'm not 100% sure.

Only asking because you said "most" in your previous post Smiley

I know, but that's the problem:

I'm not 100% sure, because the voting law is not uniform EU-wide.

Do we want it to be this way (at least for EP elections a centralized voting database) ?

Don't think it would be a bad idea, especially if we European posters argue for a centralized voting system/database with uniform standards in the US too ... Wink

Perhaps, if the EU elections were actually in any way relevant. I wouldn't go to the trouble of standardizing everything for the farce that they are.

Not that I'm an expert in constitutional law, but the ruling seems like it was a reasonable ruling to make. The important difference between national and Euro elections is that no government depends on a majority in Strasbourg, so there's no practical reason why having 15 parties with representation should be a problem.
I don't think this is outside the court's competence.

And the award for the most bizarre TV ad of a major German party in this election goes to the Left Party and their ad "angry, middle-aged, white guy yelling at you":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt47zSPgu78

The way that man waves his hands and moves while screaming angry reminds of another German...

I don't recall doing that in Lund...

Well... that's... disturbing.

Oh and anyone who is against abortion and in favor of capital punishment is outright deprived of any credibility whatsoever.

There's the dose of stupidity I needed today.

That position can be justified, but those who go on about the sanctity of life when speaking of abortion but believe executing people is ok....are hypocrites.

Ok so as long as we don't talk about it being the "sanctity," we're justified in saying it's more of a priority for us to protect innocent, defenseless life, right?

And before this turns into a flame war, let's note who started by questioning the credibility of those opposed to abortion/in favor of the death penalty.

You're kind of moving the goalposts here. It's not about priorities. Of course you can reasonably say that.

That's not at all equivalent to supporting the death penalty.

BW (3rd biggest state in Germany) EU poll:

AfD at 9% must be a new high ...

Not that the EU election is in any way relevant, but the AfD numbers are gettimg a bit troubling.

I still haven't made up my mind on who to vote for with a few days to go. That's probably the latest decision since I first started voting.

me neither actually. i'm certainly not thrilled that all the halfways decent parties want to ban gmos.

I'm undecided as well. Have been considering voting for "Die Partei" for the lulz....

Vote CDU.

I may, but your recommendation doesn't exactly strengthen the argument for doing so.

I was a volunteer at the polling station again, my shift ended at 1630. Polls close at 2100, I will have to go back then for the count.

Turnout was pretty low in our station, comparable/lower than in 2009, and about half of the turnout for Second Chamber elections. We opened 5 minutes late, the city had forgotten to deliver the ballots. Smiley.

Pretty miffed I didn't get my stempas in the post Sad. When I went to drop off my application to my commune the woman seemed totally clueless to the fact that I could vote in the Netherlands as an EU citizen.

Looks like I'll only be voting for regional and federal on Saturday. A shame because the political parties on offer in the Netherlands are more interesting and varied.

Anyway, there is a programme on dutch TV that will release exit poll results from 40,000 members in order to analyse the political scene. Seems like a dick move to me. How can you possibly determine how a country has voted through 40.000 random people. Almost a ludicrous as polls.

The beauty of statistics. It almost always works.

Voted 10 minutes ago. Turnout seemed surprisingly reasonable.
