They sound even worse when you put a "the" in front of them.  "I saw some of 'the poors' at the mall today" or "'the dumbs' across the street from me were kicking their dog again."  We must take care of 'the olds', it's the right thing to do!

Sure, but who wants to do it that way?  "I saw some of 'the poors' at the mall today" sounds much more condescending.
