Perhaps this should not surprise me coming from the candidate who said, "I'm running for office for pete's sake, I can't have illegals" in a debate.  As a minority, I've watched these veiled racist messages coming from GOP tickets for many years (remember Palin going to a rural area and describing it and similar communities as the "pro-America" parts of the country).

Romney is not a birther but this was a pander to the birther crowd.  I have seen this movie before -- Reagan campaigning against "welfare queens," Bush I running Willie Horton ads against Michael Dukakis, Palin talking about the rural "pro-America" parts of the country.  It's very clear who the target audience is for all this.
