Spring Breakers

There's nothing in the AV Club's negative review that I necessarily disagree with (the description of the movie as "vacuous, repetitive, [and] hyperbolically stupid" is especially apt), but I came in knowing what to expect, and it ended up being an immensely satisfying experience. I expect this will be the most unique movie I see all year; certainly it's the least conventional movie I've ever seen in theaters. I'm not entirely sure how something like this received such a wide release.

I really want to see it within the next week, and prolly cause James Franco is in it, though his roll as a Riff Raff-ish rapper is also fairly unconventional.

James Franco doesn't show up until about halfway through the movie, but his performance is strange and magnificently compelling. He might be the best part of an excellent movie.

That's certainly true. Selena Gomez's character does have some backstory, but the other characters are basically interchangable, to the point where I could at no point during the movie tell Ashley Benson and Vanessa Hudgens apart (it doesn't help that they looked very similar). The characters as individuals are largely beside the point, though; it wouldn't necessarily be a worse movie if it took time to develop them at the expense of the visuals, but it would certainly be a different one, and I think it would be a less compelling one.

I saw two movies in theaters yesterday, which is twice as many as I saw all last semester. Funny how things go.

Man of Steel

I expected the origin story part of it to be boring, as origin stories usually are, so I was surprised to find that the first hour and a half turned out to be remarkably good. Unfortunately, the last 45 minutes or so (the movie is far too long) were an interminable fight sequence followed by several plot holes. On balance, it wasn't a bad movie. It was certainly better than The Dark Knight Rises, although that's not really high praise.

The Kings of Summer

Delightful, and definitely the funniest movie I've seen this year. I strongly recommend it to anyone who lives somewhere where it's playing. It could use more of Alison Brie, but so could every movie ever made.

Not only was The Dark Knight Rises unbearably tedious, but structurally it was a mess. Saying a movie is better than that is no great compliment.

One thing I forgot to mention is that at one point Superman is told that sometimes he needs to take a leap of faith. No points for guessing what I thought of.

I can't remember the last time I liked a movie as much as I liked Spring Breakers.

The Spectacular Now

Would it be too hackneyed to call it spectacular? In any case, I had been looking forward to seeing this for a while, and it's certainly the second-best 2013 movie I've seen. It says a lot about this movie that its setting is utterly alien to any experiences I ever had in high school, and yet every character is perfectly relatable. While the acting is excellent across the board, Miles Teller steals the show as the charming alcoholic teenager; we find ourselves irresistibly drawn to him as much as Shailene Woodley is.

If this is playing near you, watch it. It's beautiful.

Only God Forgives

Not a great movie like Drive, but really a hilarious movie when watched a certain way.

Dazed and Confused

Certainly the best movie about teenagers I've ever seen.
