I remember when people thought he was a liberal. And DWDL continues to insist that he'll win the Senate race in 2010.

Against Barbara Boxer? I guess he would if Obama turns out to be awful & there's a huge backlash against the Democrats, but otherwise no. He also might want to save himself until 2012, in case Feinstein retires.

He'll never win anything in California again. All the interests will be lined up against him.

He has money & is moderate. That automatically gives him a better chance of winning than any other Republican, regardless of how many people hate him. Except Poizner I guess. Tongue

Well, he got lucky in 2006 after the divisive primary, and now I don't think the state employees are too kindly predisposed toward him. Tongue Plus, his spending cuts aren't exactly popular.

He did get lucky in that Angelides was the nominee. Nevertheless, his approval ratings started high, dropped quickly, rose again when he was campaigning for reelection, & now are low again. You don't think that a general election campaign would see public opinion of him skyrocketing again?

Not enough to beat one of the Senators.

As I said, I don't think he would beat Boxer barring a bad year for Democrats. He should wait to see if Feinstein retires in 2012. He would probably be our best bet at nabbing an open seat.

...and  barring "a rally around the flag" with McCain or Obama being a total waste of sperm, I think the dems will be fine in '10. It may be a year of consolidation, but not a year of where the Democrats are demonized or even considered "weak" like 2002 or 2004.

Indeed. Last year, I wrote an article for my school newspaper where I said that the Republicans should write off the White House & concentrate on trying to minimize losses in the Senate, for a possible comeback in 2012.

Write political articles for your school newspaper, do you?

Last year, I had to get an opinion article done one night, so I wrote a mostly incoherent throwaway piece that took me about 3 minutes. It exhorted the Bush Administration to clean up its act. To my horror, it was accepted.

It ended up being the best article in that issue.
