Actually I did as well.  Given the times, he was much too right-wing.

I don't mind that part........but what about the character of the individual?  He was a good decent honest man......we need more of those in the White House.

Well, at the time of Ford good honest decent Presidents were not unusual - we'd had nothing but good honest decent men all the way from FDR through LBJ, and then Ford and Carter.  Only Nixon was a scumbag.  Of course then after Carter it was all just scumbags until just here recently.

Note the emphasis I made on LBJ. He did some good things, notably civil rights, but he wasn't the most err... honest man.

He was a politician. I'm not interested in his motivations; he did good things.

Maybe to a libertarian. Patriotism matters to me, although not as much as the other three. Call me blind, but I love this country.

I would possibly join it. I think that Partisianship has become a problem in the USA and we need people who can reach across the aisle and work with members of other parties to achieve whats right for the country instead of doing what fits partylines and what makes polls go up . One of the major reasons I like McCain.
