Skyfall, Argo, and Dredd, in short sequence.

Oddly enough, I found Dredd the most enjoyable of the three. Well, maybe it isn't so strange, since Dredd is indeed an extremely well-made B-movie. Awesome soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDVabtspO2s) and a ridiculously larger-than-life title character who's played completely straight (Armed thug: "Freeze!" - Dredd: "Why?").

Cloud Atlas

Interesting genre mish-mash, to say the least. Period drama meets science fiction, huh?

1849 and 1936 storylines: drama, 1973 storyline: thriller, 2012 storyline: comedy, 2144 storyline: sci-fi action, 2321 plot: post-apocalyptic fiction.

I can say that I enjoyed it though.

Django Unchained

You know, one day Tarantino and Rodriguez ought to collaborate on a movie called Django vs. Machete! Tongue

The Place Beyond the Pines

It found it interesting that except for a few hints here and there (bulky, outdated computer monitors in some office backgrounds) they managed to conceal the fact that most of the movie is set 15 years in the past. Basically, all they had to do was to avoid showing anyone using a mobile phone/iPhone.

This got me thinking... you probably wouldn't get away with the same thing in a movie which is set in 1963 and 1978. While 1997 can still reasonably pass as 2012, 1963 couldn't pass as 1978, I suppose.

Well I can see why a European would think that, but I identified the first part as not being set in the present day fairly easily because of the designs on the money shown, which was quite dated and obviously different from modern day bills.

That and that the pop culture references were all pretty dated as well (like Gosling's Metallica shirt and that Hall and Oates quip), though that made me assume it was even earlier, like in the 80s.

You're probably right about the other things, but why would wearing a Metallica shirt necessarily set the movie during the 90s?

Metallica is still active and shirts worn by Ryan Gosling in the movie are currently available over the band's online store... which sort of proves my point:

Melancholia (pretty depressing, but that's the whole point Tongue )

Then:
Inside Llewyn Davis (perhaps not the Coens' best work, but still darn good... the familiar mix of comedy and drama and hence pretty entertaining)

And then:
12 Years a Slave (strong Best Picture contender... and if Fassbender wins Best Supporting Actor he'll certainly have earned it, boy is this man intense)

The Wolf of Wall Street

Unusually "juvenile" for a Scorsese movie to say the least. I wouldn't be surprised if it is also considered a pretty polarizing one. It seems he went totally nuts, put a lot of silly humor (including a memorable slapstick-ish scene involving a certain Lamborghini), sex, drug use and cursing in there and turned it up to eleven. The result could be either considered hilarious or ridicilous.

American Hustle at a cinema. Great entertainment, but not a great movie.

Captain Phillips - Pretty solid movie, although not quite Best Picture-worthy (obviously). Tom Hanks delivers a strong performance as always.

300: Rise of and Empire - Dumb movie, although it did make me want to f**k Eva Green. Which is probably the whole purpose of the film anyway.

Edge of Tomorrow

Despite the fact that its premise is not the most original one (basically Starship Troopers meets Groundhog Day), it is a surprisingly decent sci-fi film.

The time-loop concept must have been done a thousand times (no pun intended Tongue ) in science fiction, but this film still manages to tell a compelling story.

I'm really surprised how strong the reviews are for this. I personally have no interest in seeing it myself though.

The reviews were also very good for Looper, and I found it to be pretty mediocre.  I'll probably see Edge of Tomorrow next weekend, and have an open mind about it.  But yeah, I can sometimes end up being harsh on movies whose time travel logic is poor, but I'll have to wait and see how Edge of Tomorrow handles that.

None of them use time travel logic that measures up to Hobo Orgy Guy & Blondie though (shameless plug).

Granted, I went into Edge of Tomorrow with relatively low expectations because its plot seemed so "familiar" to me and it could have turned out to be a dumb action movie.

But those expectations were certainly exceeded. It had drama, it had humour (without making the film too silly IMO), it had character development, Tom Cruise's and Emily Blunt's performances were pretty decent, and the time-loop aspect didn't become too tedious because they often fast-forwarded to the parts of the loops were the relevant stuff occured.

I also don't think the movie's time-travel logic is as complex as Looper's, because there's only the premise that there is a reset-button for time. But maybe you best find it out for yourself.

Kick-Ass

What the f*** did I just see??

I don't even know whether I would describe it as a good or bad movie, because it kind of transcends beyond those categories.
