I just wandered in, I'm sorry I'm late.

My understanding of this was always that God's rest was to provide us with an example. We need time to rest and be still and God was demonstrating this through his actions - that there is a time to work and a time to not work - plus also what jmfcst has said about it being rest from the work of creation (I guess similar to in a court where the defence or prosecution "rests") and also about it being a symbol of the eternal rest referred to in that Hebrews passage. Now I could be misunderstanding it, but that's just how I've always understood it to mean.
