Even if you did noting special today, the recognition of Earth Day has had a lasting affect. Growing up in the 60's there was little discussion of anything related to the environment. As I watch my children talk, its clear that the environment does matter, and it matters in policy whether or not one favors controls or not. I could argue that even the most severe antienvironmentalists in Congress are way ahead of the average member from 40 years ago.
One can argue that Earth Day itself did not bring this about, and I would of course have to agree. But the effort that put Earth Day onto the calendar also moved the country significantly towards an awareness of the environment. It does remain a symbol of that effort and provides a continuing reference point for the country's environmental movement.
