I got some inside info on Mr. Santorum while working on a pro-environment/clean air-water campaign in PA in the summer of 2013 from a former colleague of his.  The religious stuff is very much a put-on as a way to pander to conservative Republicans.  Apparently he was approached by both parties in the mid-90s to be a candidate as he is naturally quite moderate.  I don't doubt that his Catholic faith is important to him, but a lot of the really out-there stuff about bestiality and teh gayz is very much a part of his fabricated persona.

That said, to decide to use hate to pander to social conservatives is always reprehensible, and his economic policy positions aren't much better than your average Republican.  They are horrible and he might be just very bad.

HP, no doubt.
