In 1960, Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York pulls off an upset and defeats Vice President Richard Nixon to win the Republican Presidential nomination.   To pacify the party's conservative wing, Rockefeller selects Nebraska Senator Carl T. Curtis for Vice President.  Though a conservative, Curtis supports civil rights.

In another surprise upset, the Democrats pick Senate Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas for President.  Johnson picks long time friend and well respected Senator Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota for Vice President.  Humphrey helps to satisfy the more liberal wing of the party.
