Former Republican governor of Virginia (elected in an upset on the backs of Black voters) whose staunch support for civil rights was met with opposition from conservative Virginia Democrats. He's well-respected for his efforts which include appointing Black people to significant positions, passing fair housing legislation, and demonstrating change by sending his children to majority Black schools in Richmond. There's a picture of him taking his daughter to her majority Black high school that garnered much publicity all over the country.

He was also the archetypal liberal Republican of a bygone era in many respects, so around the time he left office the increasingly conservative VAGOP didn't really take kindly to his beliefs. I think he had backed a number of Democrats since then.

To answer the question; FF of course, RIP.
