The Columbus Dispatch endorsed Hillary Shocked

The endorsement by the Dispatch (their first for a Democrat since 1916) is at http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/editorials/2016/10/09/1-editorial-for-president-trump-unfit-clinton-is-qualified.html.

There are a ton of endorsements coming out this weekend, so I probably won't post an updated total until late in the day.

Here's a dump of the ones I've found so far today.  When I have time, I'll try to track down some of the unknown 2012 endorsements.

The Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette published anti-endorsements of both Clinton (http://m.nwaonline.com/news/2016/oct/09/not-for-hillary-20161009/) and Trump(http://www.nwaonline.com/news/2016/oct/09/not-for-the-donald-20161009/?opinion).  The second includes the statement "Call today's dual editorials a non-endorsement", so I'm going to count it that way.

The rest are all for Clinton:

Endorsed Obama in 2012:

Olympia (WA) Olympian: http://www.theolympian.com/opinion/editorials/article106816202.html

A few more before the debate:

A few pages back I posted the list of 11 major (top 100) papers that endorsed the Republican in the last 3 elections.  As of now 5 out of 11 have endorsed (all for Clinton).

Endorsed Clinton
The Dallas Morning News
The Arizona Republic (Phoenix)
The San Diego Union-Tribune
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Columbus (OH) Dispatch

Not Endorsed yet
New York Post
Las Vegas Review-Journal
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (Little Rock)
Investor’s Business Daily (Los Angeles)
Omaha World-Herald

If Trump is going to get any major newspaper endorsements, these are still his best shot.

One of those (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette) has just called for Trump to step down, saying he has zero chance of victory. It's safe to assume they will not endorse Trump.

http://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2016/oct/10/do-the-right-thing-20161010/?f=opinion

Thanks, I'll add that as a "Not Trump".  I've got a few more but don't have time to write it up now; I'll put in another update later.

Daily papers (98) --

“Not Trump” moves into second place with a couple more:

This comes under the category of "Captain Obvious", but The Washington Post endorses Clinton.

This is probably their key paragraph:

Ms. Clinton, in other words, is dogged, resilient, purposeful and smart. Unlike Mr. Clinton or Mr. Bush when they ascended, she knows Washington; unlike Mr. Obama when he ascended, she has executive experience. She does not let her feelings get in the way of the job at hand. She is well positioned to get something done.

And Lt. Obvious is the San Francisco Examiner for Clinton: http://www.sfexaminer.com/examiner-endorsements-u-s-president/

Another “Not Trump” from Utah, the Daily Herald (Provo-Orem area): http://www.heraldextra.com/news/opinion/herald-editorials/herald-editorial-we-can-in-no-way-support-trump-for/article_e54a5b58-7eb2-5f5c-b1cf-06b240724797.html

The Portland Oregonian endorses nobody (they abandoned Presidential endorsements in 2012): http://www.oregonlive.com/opinion/index.ssf/2016/10/why_we_wont_endorse_a_presiden.html

The others are for Clinton, who passes the century mark.

Not endorsing in 2012 (in addition to the Idaho Statesman mentioned upthread) is the Stillwater (OK) News Press: http://www.stwnewspress.com/opinion/our-view-best-choice-for-president/article_79b3b296-91bf-11e6-b0ed-77fa6e31c445.html

Endorsing Romney in 2012:

Charleston (WV) Gazette-Mail: http://www.wvgazettemail.com/gazette-endorsements/20161014/gazette-endorsement-hillary-clinton-for-president.  They had previously published a “Not Trump” editorial, so the new one replaces it.  (I'm only counting one endorsement per newspaper; the most recent one wins.)

Orlando Sentinel: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/opinion/os-ed-endorsements-president-20161015-story.html

Rachel Maddow just said that the Santa Barbara News Post endorsed Trump. First to do so.

IIRC the Santa Barbara News Post has a very dodgy history.

This was already discussed, long before Rachel Maddow heard Smiley, (page 4 of this thread) and it was decided that the News Press endorsement is probably more of a primary one. The link is below:
http://www.newspress.com/Top/Article/article.jsp?Section=EDITORIALS&ID=567560425525346324

The picture that they showed had many more endorsements. Like they were endorsing Sanchez for the Senate.

My guideline has been to count endorsements only if there was some kind of verifiable evidence; if not a link to the story, a screenshot is OK.  I've left out several reported endorsements where I couldn't find anything.  I watched the Maddow clip and the dateline on the list of endorsements is Oct. 12, so this is clearly a general election endorsement and not the primary one that PeteB mentioned.  As such, I'll add it to the list.  This brings the total to:

Daily papers (135) --
Clinton 108 (Obama 45, Romney 19, None 13, unknown 31)
Not Trump 10 (Obama 1, Romney 2, None 6, unknown 1)
Nobody 10 (Romney 4, None 6)
Johnson 6 (Obama 2, Romney 3, None 1)
Trump 1 (unknown 1)

For the record, that is what I was arguing to do, back on page 4 Smiley - recognize it as the first (and so far only) Trump newspaper endorsement.

The reason it didn't stick at the time was that some of you felt that a June endorsement (two months before the convention, and coinciding with the CA Primary) was a primary endorsement and not a GE one. I still think it should count (unless The News Press retracts it Smiley).

Yes, but the June endorsement also listed Del Beccaro as their endorsement for Senate.  Since he lost in the primary, it seems pretty clear that this was indeed their list of primary endorsements.  The new list shows them endorsing Sanchez for Senate in the general election.  But it's kind of moot, since the new one definitely counts as a Trump endorsement.

Non-daily papers (5) --
Clinton 5 (Obama 3, None 2)

Smiley

Unless my computer didn't bring up the whole screen, they don't even try explaining or defending their endorsement. They just list him as "endorsed".

The political slant of the News Press is perhaps best illustrated by the fact that they endorsed Orly Taitz for Senate in 2012.

Isn't this the first Democratic Presidential endorsement by the Omaha World Herald in like a billion years ?

Since 1932 to be exact.

And BTW, it seems like Trump got his first endorsement!

Not his first.  He was also endorsed by the Santa Barbara News Press (see discussion upthread).

seriously?

They endorsed him in the primary.  If they've endorsed in the general election, I'm not aware of it.

Chico (CA) Enterprise-Record doesn't endorse anybody ("they are all flawed").  The paper always endorsed the Republican candidate in the past.

Slow day.  The only other one I've seen is El Diario (NYC) for Clinton: http://eldiariony.com/2016/10/17/el-diario-endorses-hillary-clinton-for-president-of-the-united-states/.

Are we still waiting for any major endorsements other than WSJ and NYPost?

These are the largest newspapers I'm aware of that haven't endorsed (cutoff point: circulations above 125,000).  An asterisk indicates that the paper usually doesn't endorse candidates.

Wall Street Journal *
NY Post
San Jose Mercury News
Newsday (Long Island)
LA Daily News
Orange County Register *
Philadelphia Inquirer
Minneapolis Star-Tribune
Newark Star-Ledger
Honolulu Star-Advertiser
Atlanta Journal-Constitution *
Las Vegas Review-Journal
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
St. Paul Pioneer-Press *
Detroit Free Press
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel *
Tampa Tribune
Fort Worth Star-Telegram

I wonder who are the 3 papers that endorsed Donald Trump? Don't you know Trump hates journalists as much as he hates Mexicans?

Santa Barbara News-Press
St. Joseph (MO) News-Press
Waxahatchie Daily Light

The two News-Presses, despite having the same name, are not related to each other, AFAIK.

The Santa Barbara News-Press has a checkered history; see their Wikipedia entry for details.
