Democrats have a super majority in both chambers of the legislature. If all else fails, they could just enact a law forcing Christie to appoint someone from the same party. It would probably pass this time if there were actual prospects of Menendez getting replaced by a Republican.

I don't believe they are actually veto proof?  Regardless, all states should have this kind of law.

Your right. They only have 24 seats in the Senate but they need 27 votes.

Theres also the real possibility Menendez wins his case. Nothing has stuck to him so far.

Let me reassure nervous democrats. Menendez is not going anywhere. Menendez will probably get charged with a felony for his failure to disclose gifts. That being said, there will be an appeal and there isnt anywhere near enough votes for expulsion. Even with every single vulnerable dem senator and Warren/Sanders voting for expulsion, there wont be enough votes. Lets also remember the last senator to actually be expelled was during the civil war. Worst comes to worst, he resigns in January when Murphy takes over, but there is not a snowballs chance in hell Christie is appointing anyone.

Lol guys, I know the chances of this are closer to 0% than 1%, but what if Kim Guadagno won the race this year? That would be a nightmare XD. But it won't happened.

Something absolutely disgusting and horrifying has to come out against Murphy to give Guadagno a chance at winning. And I dont mean like a leaked diplomatic cable where he calls Americans idiots. I mean that they need to find a dead body in his backyard.

Edit: Also, I hope that since Murphy passed over Sumter for Lt. Governor that he considers her as a replacement for Menendez. NJ has never had a women senator before.

Christie might appoint himself in order for New Jersey to have a Republican Senator for a year.

If Menendez goes, he's going after Murphy assumes office. Senate democrats wont vote to expel him and Menendez will sure appeal a guilty ruling. Lets also not forget that its not illegal for a felon to be a senator.
