Even against an incumbent President so seemingly successful as Nixon in 1972 (few knew that Spiro Agnew was a crook and mass recognition of wrongdoing related to Watergate would cause Nixon to implode politically) or someone as successful as Reagan in 1984 did the Democrats offer no alternative. McGovern was easy to carve up, and Mondale was basically awarded the nomination as an honor for long and meritorious service to the Democratic Party.

President Trump will have to change the political culture as Reagan did to get re-elected in a free and fair election. I have severe doubt about America having a free and fair election should the President and his advisors succeed in selecting the electorate and interfering in the opposition party as is the norm in China or Russia.
