If  you have ever read Eric Hoffer's The True Believer, then you may still find very shocking the conversion of people of brutal, extremist causes from one such cause to another. Many fascists were renegade socialists (Goebbels, Pavolini, Laval, Doriot, Streicher, Quisling... and don't forget the monstrous David Curtis Stephenson, one of the most powerful KKK leaders of the 1920s). Stalin's henchmen in Eastern Europe often found the most resolute and ferocious defenders of Communism from recent fascists (Ustase, Arrow Cross, Iron Guard). Margot Honecker, wife of the nasty East German dictator Erich, had been a fervent member of a Nazi auxiliary group for girls. Upon reaching adulthood, many such girls 'graduated' to become guards in Nazi concentration camps. Margot Honecker grew up too late to become the sort of guard who might loose half-starved dogs upon helpless inmates to be killed and eaten, but not too late to become a fanatical Communist.

Iraq is a mess in part because the brutal Ba'athists who could no longer torture and murder on behalf of Satan Hussein got the opportunity to do so on behalf of ISIS. Going from being a fervent Nazi or Klansman to Islamist? It has happened. I have seen fascists state that they admired someone like Mao or Brezhnev for their techniques. Needless to say, I want nothing to do with a group calling itself "National Bolsheviks". It may be ironic, but a Ku Kluxer and a Black Panther often have far more similarities with each other than with moderate conservatives or with the NAACP who have no use for violence.

Extremists do not choose their causes based upon any noble principles. For them, power, brutality, and the opportunity to steal from pariahs who used to own something is enough. When power goes from one extremist cause to another they are the first volunteers to sell out the objects of their recent loyalty so that they can save their own hides. Fanatical causes like fascism, communism, Islamism, and Ba'athism have great need for brutal enforcers.

So who would be the most likely enforcers of a foreign Communist power -- a Klansman or a member of the Democratic Socialists of America? The Klansman! Of ISIS? A Klansman who would see the opportunity to beat, rob, and kill people who never appreciated Ku Kluxism.

On the other side... causes that want an end to the bloodshed once in power, like the British or Americans in occupation of Germany, the Zionists in Israel, the anti-Apartheid cause, democrats replacing the Commies in the former Soviet bloc or thug regimes in South America around 1990 have no use for such thugs.

The fanatic reads the signals of other fanatics very well.
