Why would anyone support him? In his most recent executive position as RNC Chair he was a disaster.

Didn't he have a hand at the 2010 Midterms. The only thing he was a disaster at was money management. Price us is great at that, and he lost badly last year.
IIRC, much of the management of the party was increasingly taken out of his hands as everything he touched turned to $h#t. The RCCC and RSCC took an extraordinarily high control of the 2010 campaign as a result of this.

2010 being a GOP romp was decidedly despite Steele, not because of him. It's rather telling that he stepped down as RNC Chair without widespread praise only a few months after the greatest GOP mid-term victory in decades. No one in the GOP mourned his passing. Had an RNC Chair been heavily (or even moderately) involved in that kind of success, there would've been calls for him to remain Chairman for life. Instead, there was only the sound of crickets chirping.

So Terry McAuliffe will be a great Governor because he was good at the DNC?

No, I didn't imply that. I'm saying that Steele's failure as RNC Chair--along with the lack of any other apparant leadership qualities--strongly indicates he'd make a poor executive.
