The answer to both is "yes". That's frequently how it works.

No one would care if this headline was about Laura Bush, Barbara Bush, or Michelle Obama because we expect first lady's to do stuff like this.

Who cares what people "expect"? First Lady is not a public office. Melania, Laura, Michelle etc. are private citizens like you and me. Assigning certain duties based on who they're married to strikes me as a creepy monarchical relic tbh.

I don't know and don't care why Melania is doing this, but still, good for her.
