What's sad is that right-wingers will bring this up for decades as a smokescreen to disbelieve any inconvenient news story, like they still do with Duke lacrosse and Smollett

The point is the media jumps on these stories happily and when the right calls it out they get called racist.

The vast majority of the time it's not a hoax, but the hoaxes are all the right bothers to remember.
