Depends on the context.  For instance, saying "even Alexander Hamilton was in favor of high tariffs!" is a very dumb and ill-educated talking point from a member of a steel workers union.  However, a liberal Democrat saying something to the effect of "if you are so anti-immigration why did you vote for John McCain?" makes a little bit of sense.

I guess what I'm getting at is that it depends on the context of the time(s).
